Calisthenics is a full body workout that involves shifting your bodyweight to different positions and balancing it while doing the movements. Calisthenics is, therefore, an exercise that involves balancing your bodyweight in a particular position and resisting the gravitational pull. Calisthenics started way back in the 1800s and was introduced by Catherine Esther Breecher who was an American educator/author. These days it has been popularized as a street workout since it requires some space and equipment, in some instances.

Calisthenics uses your bodyweight to build muscle and to increase your physical posture/abilities in general. Since it’s a full body workout, it engages all the muscles in your body, hence, acheiving some form of symmetry in your muscular frame. On top that, it also helps you enhance your physical abilities like agility and flexibility since it involves a form of aerobics. It involves exercises such muscle-ups, levers, and other freestyle movements like spins/flips.

Calisthenics also requires minimum to no equipment at all, all you need is ample space and a gentle surface. Unlike using gym equipment like barbells and dumbbells, calisthenics works out almost every muscle in your body at once. Although, it has a lot of advantages, it may take you a while to master the art of calisthenics. I have been practising it for a few months now and I’m still finding it hard to balance my full bodyweight on my hands.

In summary, calisthenics is a form of workout which I highly recommend since it involves full body workout. It also involves balancing your bodyweight which reduces the risk of overworking your muscles like in the case of using gym equipment. The earlier you learn and practise calisthenics, the more likely you will be to benefit from it. The best way to kick-off your practise is by doing exercises like squats to handstand, spiderman pushups and split squat jumps.
